(If you buy a rabbit less than 10 weeks old advertising it comes vaccinated you will still need a booster shot - s for bunny?s full protection in its first year of life)
Rabbit haemorrhagic disease (RHD), also known as rabbit calicivirus disease (RCD) or viral haemorrhagic disease (VHD)
What is viral haemorrhagic disease?
Viral haemorrhagic disease (VHD or HVD) is a horrible viral condition that only affects rabbits.
How is it spread?
It is caused by a highly contagious virus which is transmitted from rabbit to rabbit ?
(Wild rabbit to pet rabbit, pet rabbit to pet rabbit)
Or on contaminated equipment, clothing and feed.
Insects ? flies, mosquitoes, rodents and birds may also be able to carry the virus and infect isolated rabbits (such as pet rabbits).
VHD is nearly always fatal - it causes massive bleeding (haemorrhage) from the internal organs and the animals die a painful death as a result of the overwhelming blood loss.
WHEN DO I VACCINATE MY RABBIT?
Your rabbit can be vaccinated against VHD when it reaches
10 to 12 weeks.
It then requires a booster injection every year.
In the event of an outbreak of VHD,
= (council sets the virus off in your area) to control wild rabbit population -
Often advertised in your local paper or you can call council & ask.
NOTE: Baby rabbits can be vaccinated at 6 weeks of age,
BUT - They will require another booster shot at 10 weeks =
(4 weeks after original vaccination).
To provide them with full protection for the first year.
Which rabbits should be vaccinated? All rabbits.
Vaccination Protocol
If your rabbit is vaccinated prior to 10 weeks of age, it will need a booster vaccination at 4 week interval, followed up by annual boosters.
If your rabbit receives a vaccination after 10 weeks of age, then only one injection is required initially, followed up with annual boosters.
The cost of vaccination is a very small price to pay to ensure your rabbit has the best chance of not succumbing to the disease.
(Opinions do vary) :O)
A rabbit care sheet WILL BE PROVIDED WITH YOUR NEW BUNNY
HAVE A HAPPY HOPPY DAY
